Double Gold for Mardouw at the 2018 SA Olive Awards

Mardouw Olive Estate scooped a double gold at the 2018 SA Olive Awards held on 23 August 2018 at La Paris Estate in Paarl. Building on the Swellendam based Olive Estate’s 2017 double gold accomplishment, Mardouw’s flagship XXV Intense and the Mardouw Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil have been acknowledged by a panel of local and international tasting judges from the USA, Spain and Argentina, for their distinct quality and flavour.

“We are proud to see that the Mardouw brand is establishing itself as a consistent, gold-awarded brand,” says André Verder, Mardouw Olive Estate owner and long-time investor in South Africa’s olive oil industry. “Years of investing in research, soil, trees, people and equipment are today culminating in top products that are being valued for their natural purity and culinary finesse all over the world.”

Mardouw’s olives are grown in Mediterranean-like climate and soil conditions at the foothills of the Langeberg Mountains in Swellendam. Gentle hand-picking at optimal ripeness, careful cold extraction within 24 hours after harvest, and expertly blending by resident oil wizard Chris van Niekerk, guarantee the unique, fruity and sharp peppery characteristics of Mardouw’s extra virgin olive oil. The entire process, from fruit to flask, takes place at the Mardouw estate.

“Olive oil is only Extra Virgin if the free fatty acid content is below 0,8%,” explains Philip King, Mardouw General and Sales Manager. “That’s the international standard, promulgated by the International Olive Council. Mardouw takes this one step further, by returning consistently remarkably low lab results of 0.24% FFA and 4.0 meq/kg PV for XXV, and 0.37% FFA and 6.0 meq/kg PV for our Oil of the Olive. That’s quality in numbers.”
